The US now has nearly 500,000 troops fighting in Vietnam. The US and USSR continue the space race to see who would be the first to land a man on the moon.

The fashions of both America and UK are heavily influenced from a small street in Central London, Carnaby Street, part of the swinging London scene. Both women and men wear patterned trousers, flowered shirts and boots. The Aberfan disaster occurs in South Wales on October 21st , when a spoil heap containing unwanted rock from the local coal mine slides down Merthyr Mountain. It destroys twenty houses and a farm before going on to demolish virtually all of Pantglas Junior School. 144 people were killed, 116 of whom were children mostly between the ages of 7 and 10. The Moors murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley are jailed for life for the murder of 3 children.

The Mini Skirt is the fashion of choice – the name Mini-Skirt is attributed to Mary Quant. England defeats Germany to win the 1966 World Cup Final. The worlds first vertical Jump Jet, the Hawker-Siddeley Harrier, is introduced, the Hovercraft enters regular service across English Channel, and Pampers create the first disposable Nappy.
