1958: E.E.C. Founded

The USA’s first satellite is launched from Cape Canaveral, NASA is formed, and the first Microchip is envisaged by Texas Instruments in 1958.

In Britain, the first transatlantic passenger jet service begins with flights between London and New York in the new de Havilland Comet jetliner. On 9th June 1958 London Gatwick Airport re-opens as London’s second airport, after two years of extensive reconstruction.

This is also the year of the Munich air disaster in which seven Manchester United football players die.
